Melyane Island (Bulgarian: остров Меляне, romanized: ostrov Melyane) is a small, ice-free island located in a very cold part of the world called Antarctica. It's part of the South Shetland Islands, which are a group of islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. Melyane Island is the most southern island in a smaller group called the Dunbar Islands. It sits just off the coast of Varna Peninsula on Livingston Island.
This island is about 280 meters long and 90 meters wide. That's roughly the length of two and a half football fields! Long ago, in the early 1800s, people who hunted seals visited this area. The island gets its name from a town called Melyane in Bulgaria.
Where is Melyane Island Located?
Melyane Island is found in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean. Its exact spot is at 62 degrees, 28 minutes, 44.2 seconds South, and 60 degrees, 11 minutes, 23 seconds West. This means it's quite far south, close to the bottom of the world!
The island is very close to other landforms. It is only 250 meters south of Balsha Island. It's also about 1.27 kilometers west of a place called Slab Point. Another important spot, Kotis Point on Livingston Island, is about 2.52 kilometers to the north-northeast. Maps of this area were made by British explorers in 1968 and by Bulgarian scientists in 2009.
