Mercedes Llopart (born in 1895, died on September 2, 1970) was a talented Spanish opera singer. She was a soprano, which means she had a high singing voice. Later in her life, she became a very important singing teacher in Italy, helping many future opera stars.

Early Life and First Performances

Mercedes Llopart was born in Barcelona, Spain. She studied music and singing in her hometown. Her first time singing in an opera was in Barcelona in 1915. After that, she moved to Italy. She sang in many smaller theaters there to gain experience.

Singing on Big Stages

In 1920, Mercedes Llopart made her debut at the Rome Opera. She sang there regularly until 1925. She also performed at other famous places. In 1922, she sang as Elsa in the opera Lohengrin at the Verona Arena. She played the main role in Tosca in Palermo in 1923. In 1925, she was Ginevra in La cena delle beffe in Genoa.

A very important moment came in 1924. A famous conductor named Arturo Toscanini invited her to sing at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. This is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. There, she sang as Sieglinde in Die Walkure. She also performed as Alice Ford in Falstaff and the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. She was also the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro. In 1927, she created the role of Dolly in the new opera Sly. She sang alongside the great Italian tenor Aureliano Pertile. Mercedes Llopart also sang in London at the Royal Opera House in 1926. In 1929, she performed as Tosca at the Monte Carlo Opera.

A New Career: Teaching Opera Stars

Mercedes Llopart stopped performing on stage in 1945. She then started a new career as a singing teacher in Milan. She became very well-known for her teaching skills. Many of her students became famous opera singers themselves. Some of her most famous students include Renata Scotto, Fiorenza Cossotto, and Anna Moffo. Other notable students were Elena Souliotis, Biancamaria Casoni, Rubén Dominguez, Cecilia Nuñez Albanese, Ana María Iriarte, Francisco Ortiz, Bernabé Martí, Alfredo Kraus, Francisco Kraus, and Ivo Vinco. Mercedes Llopart passed away in Milan in 1970.
