Mercedes was a student at California State University, Northridge before she tried out for America's Next Top Model. She was picked as one of the 12 finalists for the second season of the show. This season aired in 2004. Before that, in 2000, she also appeared on the MTV reality show Fear.
Modeling and Acting Career
On America's Next Top Model, Mercedes did very well. She was called first twice, meaning she had the best photo of the week. She also won one challenge. She ended up as the runner-up, coming in second place. While on the show, she was worried about telling the other contestants that she had lupus.
