Mandy Moore's Career Journey
Starting Out in Music and Acting (1993–1999)
Mandy Moore became interested in singing and acting when she was very young. Her grandmother, Eileen Friedman, who was a professional ballerina, was one of her inspirations. Mandy convinced her parents to let her take acting and voice lessons.
She began acting in local plays and singing the national anthem at events in Orlando. At age twelve, she attended the Stagedoor Manor performing arts camp. A director there described her as a "quiet, sweet girl" who earned many solo parts but didn't seek the spotlight.
When Mandy was thirteen, she started working on her own music. A FedEx delivery man heard her singing in an Orlando studio. He knew someone at Epic Records and sent them a copy of Mandy's demo. Soon after, Mandy signed a record deal with Epic Records.
First Albums and MTV Fame (1999–2000)
After signing with Epic Records, Mandy started recording her first album. She had to leave high school in ninth grade but continued her education with tutors. In the summer of 1999, Mandy toured with popular boy bands like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys.
Her first song, "Candy", came out on August 17, 1999. It was a big hit in many countries, reaching number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. It sold over 500,000 copies and was certified Gold. In Australia, it was even more successful, reaching number 2 and getting a Platinum certification. Mandy also became a host and VJ for MTV, appearing on shows like Total Request Live.
Mandy's first album, So Real, was released on December 7, 1999. It was released in only a few countries and received mixed reviews. The album reached number 31 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over one million copies, earning a Platinum certification. The second song from the album, "Walk Me Home", was not as successful.
Before promoting So Real ended, Mandy started working on new music. The song "I Wanna Be with You" was released on July 11, 2000. This song became her first Top 40 hit, peaking at number 24. It was also a Top 20 hit in Australia.
A new version of So Real, called I Wanna Be with You, was released on May 9, 2000. This album included new songs and remixes. It was a commercial success, reaching number 21 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and selling over 500,000 copies. Mandy won the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Rising Star in 2000 for this album.
