A Look Back: Merrimacport's History
Early Beginnings
Merrimacport has a long history, starting way back in 1638. It began as a simple fishing village. For a long time, it was part of Amesbury, a nearby town. People knew this area as West Amesbury.
Growing into a Town
During the time of the Industrial Revolution, many new factories and businesses started. A new village grew up around what is now Merrimac square. This area was close to Merrimacport. In 1876, West Amesbury, which included Merrimacport (also called South Amesbury), decided to become its own town. It officially separated from Amesbury and became the town of Merrimac.
Where is Merrimacport?
Merrimacport is separated from the rest of Merrimac by a big highway. This highway is called Interstate 495. The village stretches from the southern border of Amesbury down to Locust Street.
