Mersch (Luxembourgish: Miersch) is a town and a 'commune' in central Luxembourg. A 'commune' is like a local government area. Mersch is also the capital of the canton of Mersch, which is a larger region.

Exploring Mersch's Location

Mersch is located right in the middle of Luxembourg. It's a special place because three rivers meet here: the Alzette, the Mamer, and the Eisch.

The Mersch commune covers an area of about 49.7 square kilometers (that's about 19.2 square miles). The land here ranges in height from 208 meters (682 feet) to 428 meters (1,404 feet) above sea level. The railway station in Mersch is about 220 meters (722 feet) high.

Neighboring Communes of Mersch

Mersch is surrounded by ten other communes in Luxembourg. Nine of these are part of the Mersch canton, just like Mersch itself. Only the Kehlen commune is different; it belongs to the Capellen canton.

In 2017, there were 9,195 people living in the Mersch commune. This means the population density was about 185 people per square kilometer.

Other Villages in Mersch Commune

Historical Castles to Visit

Mersch is home to some interesting historical sites, especially its castles.

Mersch Castle: A Local Landmark

The Mersch castle is one of the many castles found in the famous Valley of the Seven Castles. This castle is right in the center of Mersch town. Its history goes all the way back to the 13th century! Today, the castle is used for the commune's administrative offices.

Pettingen Castle: A Well-Preserved Ruin

About 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of Mersch, you'll find the Pettingen Castle in the village of Pettingen. This castle is one of the best-preserved fortified castles in all of Luxembourg. It's a great place to see what old castles looked like.
