Map of Arizona highlighting Gila County
The Mescal Mountains are located in Southern Gila County, AZ

The Mescal Mountains are a group of connected mountain ridges. You can find them in southern Gila County, Arizona. The local Western Apache language name for them is Nadah Choh Dasán. This means "Big Mescal Sitting There."

The tallest point in these mountains is El Capitan Mountain. It stands at 6,568 feet (2,002 meters) high. This peak is quite prominent, meaning it rises sharply from the land around it. The closest mountain of similar height is about 6 miles (10 km) away. That mountain is in the Pinal Mountains to the northwest.

You can see parts of the Mescal Mountains from Arizona State Route 77. This highway runs between Globe and Winkelman.

Where Are the Mescal Mountains?

The Mescal Mountains are mostly located within the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. This reservation is home to the San Carlos Apache people. Only the western part of the mountains and the highest peak are outside the reservation.

The mountains are about 10 miles west of San Carlos Lake. This lake is also part of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. The highest point, El Capitan Mountain, is located at 33.2001°N, 110.7562°W.

The nearest towns to the Mescal Mountains are Christmas and Winkelman. These towns are located to the south of the mountain range.

Why Are They Special?

The Mescal Mountains are part of the Arizona transition zone. This is a unique area where different types of landscapes meet. It's where the desert lowlands meet the higher, cooler forests.

Even though they are large, the Mescal Mountains are often overlooked. This is because the Pinal Mountains are nearby. The Pinal Mountains are bigger and more noticeable from the highway. Both mountain ranges can be seen from the same part of Arizona State Route 77.

Exploring the Mountains

There are no official hiking trails on the Mescal Mountains. Also, there are no paths leading directly to them. Since most of the mountains are on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, you might need special permission to visit. It's always important to respect tribal lands and their rules.
