History of Metamora
The first people settled in the area that is now Metamora in the 1830s. A post office opened in Metamora in 1841.
How Metamora Got Its Name
The name Metamora comes from a very popular play from 1829. The play was called Metamora; or, The Last of the Wampanoags. It was written by John Augustus Stone and was performed for over 60 years!
This play was so popular that it inspired four towns in the Midwest to use the name Metamora.
- Metamora, Ohio, was named in the 1830s.
- Metamora Township, Michigan was named in 1838. This happened after the Toledo War (1836-1837) moved Metamora from Michigan Territory to Ohio.
- Metamora, Indiana was also named in 1838.
- Metamora, Illinois got its name in 1845.
