Metz is a small, quiet community in Marion County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." You can find Metz along U.S. Route 250, about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northwest of Mannington. It used to have its own post office, but that closed in 2011.
The Story of Metz
Metz was started a long, long time ago, in the early 1800s, by a man named Jacob Metz. This was even before West Virginia became its own state in 1863! West Virginia was formed by counties that stayed loyal to the Union during the American Civil War. Metz was never part of a Confederate state.
The community was first known as "Bee Hive Station." This was because Jacob Metz kept many bee hives there. In 1850, representatives from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad wanted to buy land from Jacob. They needed it for their train tracks. Jacob agreed to give them the land. But he had one condition: they had to build a train station and name it after him. So, the station was called "Metz Crossing." Over time, the name was shortened to just "Metz," and it's still called that today.
