Turning Professional and Early Success (2005–2007)
Michaëlla started playing in professional tournaments in 2004. In 2005, at age 16, she played in her first Grand Slam, the Australian Open. She reached the second round. Later that year, she won her first WTA Tour event, the Tashkent Open. This was the first WTA win for a Dutch woman in eight years. She finished 2005 ranked No. 58 in the world.
In 2006, she started strong by reaching the final of the Hopman Cup with her partner Peter Wessels. She then won her second WTA title in Hobart. At the Australian Open, she reached the third round but had to stop playing due to heat. She won her third WTA title in 's-Hertogenbosch, beating a top-10 player for the first time. She ended 2006 ranked No. 35.
