Michaela Dietz was born in Incheon, South Korea, on November 1, 1982. She was adopted at three months old and grew up in Cooperstown, New York. She studied International Studies at Middlebury College.

Michaela has shared that her own experience of being adopted helped her understand and voice the character of Amethyst in Steven Universe. She began acting on television in 2005. Her first animated voice role was Amethyst.
