Michiel Borstlap (born August 5, 1966) is a talented Dutch pianist and composer. He also helped start a music company called Gallery Play Media. Michiel is known for his amazing piano skills and for creating beautiful music. He has performed his music in many countries around the world.

Michiel's Musical Journey

Michiel Borstlap finished his music studies in 1992. He graduated with top honors from the Conservatory in Hilversum, Netherlands. There, he learned piano from famous Dutch teachers like Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna.

In 1996, Michiel won a big award called the Thelonious Monk / BMI Composers Award. He won it for a song he wrote called "Memory of Enchantment." Two very famous jazz musicians, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, even recorded his song! They played it on their album 1+1 and during their world tours. A year later, Michiel signed a special music contract with Verve.

In 2003, the Emir of Qatar asked Michiel to compose an Arab opera called Avicenna. Michiel also wrote a book about creating this opera. He spent a month in Palermo, Italy, while writing the book.

From 2004 to 2009, Michiel toured a lot with the British fusion drummer Bill Bruford. They made three albums and a DVD together. In 2007, Michiel also played concerts with Canadian singer Gino Vannelli in many places, including Montreal, Moscow, and Italy.

Michiel's solo albums, starting in 2010, were a big change in his career. He released SOLO 2010 and then Blue (Songs from Father to Daughter) in 2011. In 2014, his album Frames came out. He toured the Netherlands with this album. In 2015, his music from Frames was used in a show with the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. They worked together again in 2019.

In 2016, Michiel released a live album called Arena. It was recorded at the Johan Cruyff ArenA and included both a CD and a DVD. His album Velvet was released in 2017. He played this album on his very first upright piano.

Michiel's sound-sculpture, 'Audire et Videre I', is now part of the permanent collection at Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle, Netherlands. You can hear it in the museum's main hall.

Michiel Borstlap has performed in 92 countries across all continents! He lives in the Netherlands and is a father. Today, Michiel is a co-founder of a music company called Gallery Play Media.
