Michiel Borstlap (born 5 August 1966) is a talented Dutch pianist and composer. He is also one of the people who started the B2B Music Network Gallery Play Media. Michiel is known for his amazing piano playing and for creating beautiful music.

Michiel's Musical Journey

Michiel Borstlap finished his music studies in 1992. He studied at the Conservatory in Hilversum, which is a special school for music. He learned piano from famous Dutch teachers like Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna. He finished with the highest possible honors!

In 1996, Michiel won a very important award. It was the American Thelonious Monk / BMI Composers Award for his song "Memory of Enchantment." Two legendary musicians, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, even recorded his song. They put it on their album 1+1. They also played it during their concerts all around the world. A year later, Michiel signed a special agreement with Verve, a big music company. This meant they would release his music.

In 2003, something very unique happened. The Emir (ruler) of Qatar asked Michiel to write an Arab opera called Avicenna. An opera is a play where the story is told mostly through singing and music. Michiel even wrote a book about creating this opera while he was living in Italy for a month.

Michiel has worked with many other artists. In 2007, he played concerts with Canadian singer Gino Vannelli. They performed in cities like Montreal, Moscow, and many places in Italy. From 2004 to 2009, he toured a lot with Bill Bruford. Bill is a famous British drummer who plays jazz fusion music. They released three albums and a DVD together.

After 2010, Michiel started releasing solo piano albums. These albums showed a new direction in his music. In 2010, he released SOLO 2010, and in 2011, he released Blue. This album was special because it was dedicated to his daughter.

Michiel also performed his music at a special event. He played during the memorial service for Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau. This took place at a historic church in Delft, the Netherlands.

In 2014, his album Frames came out. He toured with this album in the Netherlands. In 2015, his music from Frames was used in a dance show. This was a collaboration with the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, a famous dance company. They worked together again in 2019.

In 2016, Michiel released a live album called Arena. It was recorded at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, a very large stadium. This album came with both a CD and a DVD. In 2017, he released Velvet, an album he played on his very first upright piano.

A museum in the Netherlands, Museum de Fundatie, bought one of Michiel's artworks. It's a "sound-sculpture" called 'Audire et Videre I'. This means it's an art piece that combines sound and sculpture. You can now hear it in the museum's main hall.

Michiel Borstlap has traveled all over the world to perform. He has played in 92 different countries on every continent! He lives in the Netherlands and is a father to his daughter, Blue. Today, he is also a co-founder of Gallery Play Media, a company involved in music.
