Early Life and Music Start
Assala was born in Damascus, Syria. Her father, Mostafa Nasri, was a respected composer and singer. Assala started singing at a young age. She performed patriotic, religious, and children's songs when she was just fourteen.
She even sang the theme song for a cartoon show called Hekayat Alamiyah. In 1984, her father passed away after a car accident. At 15, Assala helped her mother, Aziza Al-Babelli, care for her younger siblings.
Assala's professional music career began in 1991. Her first big hit was the Egyptian song Law Ta'rafou. This album featured four Egyptian songs in a classic Egyptian music style. It quickly became very popular in Egypt. She soon became a well-known singer across the Arab world.
Supporting Her Home Country
Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Assala Nasri has shown her support for the Syrian people. She has spoken out for peace and for the conflict to end. She even wrote one song in 2011, which was her first time composing music.
Assala sang at the International Peace Day event. She became an ambassador for "Peace Building Through Music." She believes music can help bring people together.
In 2019, Assala performed "Right Where I'm Supposed to Be." This was the official song for the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She sang it with other famous artists like Ryan Tedder, Avril Lavigne, Luis Fonsi, Hussain Al Jassmi, and Tamer Hosny.
Television Appearances
Assala has also hosted her own TV program called Soula (Arabic: صولا). The show aired on Al Hayat TV and Dubai TV. On the show, guest musicians would visit Assala at her home in Cairo, Egypt.
In 2022, Assala became a judge on the TV show Saudi Idol. She judged alongside other artists like Aseel Abu Bakr, Ahlam, and Majid Al Mohandis.
Family Life
Assala's first marriage was to Ayman Al Dahabi. They had two children: a daughter named Sham, born in 1992, and a son named Khaled, born in 1998. They divorced in 2005. Assala received custody of her children.
Her second marriage was to Palestinian-Egyptian director Tarek Alarian in 2006. In May 2011, they welcomed twin boys, Adam and Ali. Assala announced her divorce from Tarek Alarian in January 2020.
Assala currently lives in Cairo with her four children. In September 2021, she married Faeq Hassan. He is from Iraq and works as a business manager for the Iraqi-Saudi singer Majid Al Mohandis.
Assala is a Sunni Muslim. She was granted Bahraini citizenship by Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This happened after she performed in an operetta celebrating Bahrain's Independence Day.
