Peter Clark Erskine (born June 5, 1954) is a famous American jazz drummer. He is best known for playing in the popular jazz fusion bands Weather Report and Steps Ahead. Jazz fusion is a style of music that mixes jazz with other genres like rock and funk.

Early Life and Musical Start

Erskine was born in Somers Point, New Jersey. He discovered his love for music very early and began playing the drums when he was only four years old.

To improve his skills, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, a special high school for young artists. After graduating, he went on to study percussion at Indiana University.

A Career in Music

Erskine's professional career took off in 1972 when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After playing with them for four years, he spent two years with musician Maynard Ferguson.

Joining Famous Bands

In 1978, Erskine's career reached a new level when he joined the band Weather Report. There, he became part of the rhythm section with the legendary bass player Jaco Pastorius. The rhythm section is the heartbeat of a band, providing the beat and groove. Erskine recorded five albums with Weather Report.

After his time with Weather Report, he joined another well-known group called Steps Ahead.

Throughout his career, Erskine has played with many famous artists. He has toured with the great jazz pianist Chick Corea. He also played drums on the album Aerial by singer Kate Bush.

Erskine is married to Mutsuko Erskine. They have two children. Their daughter, Maya Erskine, is a successful actress and writer. Their son, Taichi Erskine, works in film as an editor and producer.
