Mickleton is a small village in County Durham, England. It's about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north-west of a town called Barnard Castle. Even though it's now part of County Durham, Mickleton used to be in a different area called the North Riding of Yorkshire. It became part of County Durham in 1974.

Village History

Mickleton is quite old! It was first written about in a famous book called the Domesday Book way back in 1086. At that time, about 37 families lived there.

Mickleton in the Past

In the late 1800s, a writer named John Marius Wilson described Mickleton. He said it was a township (a small area with its own local government) near the River Tees. It had a post office, a train station, and several churches. About 688 people lived there, and much of the land was high moorland (open, uncultivated land).

Railway Connections

Mickleton used to have its own train station! It was part of the Tees Valley Railway and served the village from 1868 until 1964.

Local Landmarks

The village is located where the River Lune joins the River Tees. Not far from Mickleton, on the Lunedale Hills, you can find Kirkcarrion. This is an ancient burial site from the Bronze Age, which was a time long, long ago when people used bronze tools.

How Mickleton is Governed

Mickleton is part of County Durham. This means that decisions about local services like roads, schools, and libraries are made by the Durham County Council.

National Politics

For national elections, Mickleton is part of the Bishop Auckland area. This area elects one person to represent them in the UK Parliament in London. This person is called a Member of Parliament (MP). Since 2019, the MP for Bishop Auckland has been Dehenna Davison from the Conservative Party.

Community Life

Mickleton has a lively community with places for people to gather and have fun.

Village Hall

The Mickleton village hall was built in 1993 and officially opened in 1994. It's a busy place where many things happen. The local parish council holds its meetings there every month. People can also rent it for private parties or events. The hall also hosts entertainment events, like "Mickleton Live," where famous musicians have performed, such as the guitarist Albert Lee.

Local Businesses

The village has two traditional English pubs: The Crown and The Blacksmith's Arms. These are popular spots for locals and visitors. There's also a gas station in the village, which is owned independently.
