Middle Angles facts for kids
The Middle Angles were an important group of people who lived in the ancient kingdom of Mercia during the time of the Anglo-Saxons in England. It's thought that these people, who were a type of Angles, moved into the area we now call the Midlands (the central part of England) from East Anglia (the eastern part) early in the 500s.
The land they settled in is now mostly covered by modern Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. They were already living there before the famous king Penda ruled Mercia (around 626 to 655 AD). In 653, King Penda made his oldest son, Peada, the king specifically of the Middle Angles. For a while, the Middle Angles kept their own special identity within the larger kingdom of Mercia. They even had their own religious leader, called a bishop, who was based in the city of Leicester.

Who Were the Middle Angles?
The Middle Angles were one of the main groups of people who made up the powerful kingdom of Mercia. They were part of the larger group known as the Angles, who came to Britain from mainland Europe many centuries ago. These groups helped shape early England.
Their Land and History
The Middle Angles lived in the central part of England, which is why they were called "Middle." This area was very important because it was a crossroads for different groups of people. They settled there long before Mercia became a very strong kingdom. Their land was rich and good for farming.
Important Leaders
One of the most important leaders connected to the Middle Angles was Peada. He was the son of King Penda, a very powerful king of Mercia. When Peada became king of the Middle Angles, it showed how important this group was within Mercia. Having their own king helped them keep their unique identity for a time.
Their Own Bishop
The Middle Angles also had their own bishop, who was a high-ranking religious leader. This bishop was based in the city of Leicester. Having their own bishop meant they had a special religious center and showed they were an important part of the early Christian church in England.
