Middlebury is a town in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. It is located in Middlebury Township. The town is about 35 miles east of South Bend. It is also 130 miles east of Chicago, Illinois. Middlebury is 165 miles north of Indianapolis. This town is in Northern Indiana's Amish country. In 2010, the town had 3,420 people living there.

Geography of Middlebury
Middlebury is located by the Little Elkhart River. The area has rolling hills and farmland.
In 2010, Middlebury covered about 3.78 square miles (9.79 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 3.76 square miles (9.74 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.
History of Middlebury
Long ago, the Miami and later the Potawatomi Native American tribes lived in this area. In 1832, the first European settlers arrived. They came from a town called Middlebury, Vermont. They chose this spot because the rolling hills reminded them of their home in Vermont.
Later, in 1841, the first Amish families moved here. They came from Somerset County, Pennsylvania. They settled in the countryside around the town. Middlebury Township was officially started in 1834. The town of Middlebury became a town in 1868.
In 1888, the railroad came to Middlebury. This helped the town's economy grow. It added manufacturing jobs to the existing farming jobs.

In 2010, Middlebury had 3,420 people living there. There were 1,263 households and 822 families. The town had about 911 people per square mile. Most people in Middlebury were White (95.6%).

Schools in Middlebury
The Middlebury Community School system is a big reason families move to the area. Schools are set up for different age groups. These include grades K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
Northridge High School opened in 1969. It replaced the older Middlebury and Jefferson Township High Schools. In 2008-09, the high school moved into a new building. The old high school became Northridge Middle School. Heritage Middle School then became an intermediate school.
Jefferson Elementary was rebuilt in 1998. This happened shortly after Orchard View Elementary opened in 1995.

The town also has a free library. It is called the Middlebury Community Public Library.
Economy of Middlebury
Middlebury's economy relies on three main things: farming, manufacturing, and tourism. The town received money in 2009 to help with economic development. This money was for planning how to improve roads, use land wisely, and rebuild the downtown area. The plan also aimed to balance the needs of the large Amish population with the rest of the community.
Industries in Middlebury
Several big companies make recreational vehicles (RVs) in Middlebury. These include Grand Design, Winnebago, Jayco, and Coachmen RV.
Culver Duck Farms is also in Middlebury. It is the second largest producer of white Pekin ducks in the United States. They ship over 70,000 ducks each week all over the world. Syndicate Systems has a large factory here that makes shelves for stores. Middlebury is also home to ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, a bus manufacturer. The Meijer Central Kitchen makes deli salads, sandwiches, cookies, and sub buns for all Meijer stores. It also serves as a distribution center.
Tourism in Middlebury
A big part of Middlebury's tourism is Das Dutchman Essenhaus. This place has an Amish-themed restaurant, an inn, a conference center, and shops. Over 750,000 people visit it every year. They also make and ship homemade food products from this location.
The town also has the Krider World's Fair Garden. Another popular spot is the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail.
