Club Career Highlights
Starting at Valencia
Miguel Angulo was born in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. He started his football journey with a local team called Sporting de Gijón. In January 1996, when he was 18 years old, he joined Valencia CF.
He first played for Valencia's reserve team, Valencia B. Then, for the 1996–97 season, he was loaned to Villarreal CF, another Spanish club. After that season, he returned to Valencia.
Success with Valencia
Angulo played a huge role for Valencia. He appeared in 434 games and scored 67 goals during his time at the Mestalla Stadium. He was a key player when Valencia won the La Liga title in 2002 and again in 2004. In those two winning seasons, he scored a total of six goals in 48 games.
He also started in the 2004 UEFA Cup Final where Valencia won by beating Olympique de Marseille. Angulo even scored as a substitute in earlier rounds of that competition. Sometimes, he played as an attacking right-back because of his team's tactics.
In 2004, Angulo almost moved to Arsenal in London, but he changed his mind at the last minute. He continued to play a lot for Valencia for the next three seasons. He scored 15 goals in 93 league games during this time.
In December 2007, Angulo and two other players were temporarily removed from the team by the new coach, Ronald Koeman. However, when Koeman was later fired, Angulo and the others were brought back. He returned to play in April 2008 and even scored in a big 5–1 win against Levante UD.
Time at Sporting CP
In August 2009, after 14 years with Valencia, Angulo left the club. Later that month, he signed a one-year contract with Sporting CP in Portugal. But after only four months, he left the Lisbon club. He then decided to retire from playing football.
Becoming a Coach
After retiring as a player, Angulo returned to Valencia as a coach. In 2014, he started coaching one of their youth teams. In December 2015, he became an assistant coach for the main Valencia team. He worked alongside Gary Neville, the head coach. Angulo left this role in March 2016 when the head coach was also dismissed.
After coaching youth teams again for three years, Angulo was hired as the manager of Valencia's reserve team, Valencia B, on June 17, 2021. In his first season, his team won their group and moved up a league. He continues to manage Valencia B and signed a contract extension until 2025.
International Career
Angulo played for the Spanish national team 11 times. His first game was on November 17, 2004, in a friendly match against England in Madrid, which Spain won 1–0. He never played in a major international tournament like the World Cup.
He also played for Spain's youth teams. He was part of the team that won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He also played for his home region's team, Asturias, in a game against Macedonia in 2000.
