Biography of Mihajlo Apostolski

Early Life and Education

Mihajlo Apostolski was born on November 8, 1906, in Štip, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. He went to primary and secondary school in his hometown.

He was very dedicated to his military education. In 1927, he graduated from the Military Academy in Belgrade, the capital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He continued his studies, graduating from the High Military Academy in 1933. By 1938, he had completed the Commanding Academy and earned the rank of major.

Role During World War II

When Yugoslavia was invaded in April 1941, Mihajlo Apostolski was a commander in the alpine units of the Royal Yugoslav Army. He helped destroy bridges in present-day Slovenia to slow down the German troops.

After Yugoslavia surrendered, Apostolski was captured by the Italian army. He was taken to a prisoner-of-war camp called Vestone. His father, who had served in the Bulgarian army, asked the Bulgarian Minister of War for his release. This request was granted, and Apostolski was set free by the Italian authorities.

After his release, Apostolski received a certificate stating he was a trustworthy Bulgarian. He then applied to join the Bulgarian army. He was offered a captain's rank in a labor battalion, but he did not accept it. Instead, he enrolled at Sofia University, where he secretly worked with underground groups.

In April 1942, he joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY). By June of the same year, he was made commander of the Headquarters of the Yugoslav partisan units in Macedonia. In May 1943, he was promoted to Major General. He also became a member of the presidency of AVNOJ, an important anti-fascist council.

In February 1944, he commanded not only Macedonian brigades but also brigades from Kosovo and Southern Serbia. He was involved in setting up ASNOM, the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia. He attended its first meeting and was elected to its presidency.

After World War II and Later Life

After World War II, Mihajlo Apostolski became a key military leader in the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Once he finished his active military service, he focused on studying the history of the Macedonian nation.

From 1965 to 1970, he led the Institute of National History in Skopje. He played an active role in creating the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and was a member from its beginning. He served as the president of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts from 1976 to 1983.

He was also a member of several other important academies:

  • Serbian Academy of Sciences
  • Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (now the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts)
  • Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo

Mihajlo Apostolski passed away on August 7, 1987, in Dojran, SFR Yugoslavia.
