About Miiesha
Miiesha Elizabeth Rose Young is an Aṉangu/Torres Strait Islander woman. She comes from the town of Woorabinda in Queensland, Australia.
Her Musical Journey
Miiesha's music is inspired by different styles. These include RnB, gospel, and soul. She also uses the power of spoken word poetry in her songs.
Her music career began after a special performance. Miiesha was one of the Kulgoodah dancers. They won the Dance Rites competition in Sydney in 2017. This competition was started by Rhoda Roberts, who leads Indigenous programs at the Sydney Opera House.
Her First Album: Nyaaringu
Miiesha released her first song, "Black Privilege," in June 2019. In May 2020, she released her first album, called Nyaaringu. This album has nine songs. They are all connected by themes from her life, her community, and her people.
Her late Grandmother's voice is featured between the songs. These parts show how important it is for older generations to share their wisdom. Radio station Triple J's Unearthed program supported her songs "Black Privilege" and "Drowning." The album reached number 28 on the ARIA Charts. It also won the ARIA Award for Best Soul/R&B Release at the 2020 ARIA Music Awards.
New Music: Smoke & Mirrors
On May 14, 2021, Miiesha released "Damaged." She said this was her most personal song yet. It won Song of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards 2021.
Later, on July 16, 2021, she released another song called "Made for Silence."
In September 2021, Miiesha announced a big project. It was a double-EP called Smoke & Mirrors. The first part was released in November 2021. These EPs explore family challenges and finding healing. The first part, Smoke, focuses on "survival." The second part, Mirrors, is about "looking back and understanding." The song "Still Dream" was released on March 4, 2022. The full Smoke & Mirrors project, combining both EPs, was released on CD and LP on June 3, 2022.
