Mikael B's Early Life and Graffiti Art
Mikael Brandrup grew up in Holbæk, Denmark. He studied graphic and web design at Københavns Tekniske Skole. Even though he liked traditional painting, Mikael started doing graffiti when he was 15 years old. He would set up wooden panels in his parents' backyard. Then he would cover them with his graffiti name, KETS.
Mikael B's Design Work
In 2008, Mikael Brandrup started a design company. He founded it with his twin brother Morten Brandrup and Mickie Storm. The company was called Identity Provided. It focused on visual communication, branding, and web design. They also worked on campaigns for companies.
For six years, they created visual styles for big companies. These included the Steen & Strøm Department Store and Chiquita Brands International. In 2014, Identity Provided joined with a larger design company in Copenhagen. This allowed Mikael Brandrup to spend more time on his fine art.
Murals and Art for Companies
Mikael Brandrup creates large wall paintings, called murals. He also makes art for businesses. In these works, he mixes graffiti styles with graphic design. His art is "vibrant and playful" but also well-organized. Mikael tries to find order in his abstract art.
Many major companies have noticed his unique style. He has worked on projects with American Express, LinkedIn, Heineken, and Google. Nike even hired him to paint a large canvas. This was for the launch of NBA player Chris Paul's new sneakers at the Santa Monica Pier. Mikael Brandrup's canvas art has been shown all over the world. In 2016, he had his own show called "Dream State." This show happened during World Art Day.
Art Collaborations
Mikael Brandrup has worked with other artists on special projects.
Working with Thomas Fryd
One of his collaborators is Thomas Fryd, a Danish photographer and director. They created a show called "Emerging Alchemy." For this show, Mikael B and Fryd made 15 paintings and two sculptures together. Fryd took amazing surreal photos of people in action. Mikael B then printed these photos on canvas. He added layers of spray paint and acrylics in his own special style.
Working with Bumblebee
Mikael B also met Los Angeles artist Bumblebee at an art show. Bumblebee is known for his detailed designs and sharp stencils. Mikael B, on the other hand, uses wild-style lettering and bright colors. The two artists decided to create a series of murals together. They blended their different styles in new ways.
Their first mural was on a large wall in South Central LA. The second was a special project at Google’s headquarters in Santa Monica. The third mural was on an outdoor wall at The Container Yard. This mural was even photographed for the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Working with Lonely Whale
Mikael B joined forces with Lonely Whale, a non-profit group. This group was started by actor Adrian Grenier. Their goal is to raise money for ocean conservation. Mikael B's art exhibition, "Awake," opened in Miami in 2017. It aimed to make people aware of how plastic pollution harms ocean animals. All the money from art sales went to Lonely Whale. They also sold a special print online. At the opening, Mikael B and Adrian Grenier showed a special duck sculpture. Mikael B had custom-painted this sculpture by Philippe Starck.
