Mikael Salomon grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. He photographed many films in his home country. His work earned him awards like the Robert Award and Bodil Awards.
In the late 1980s, he moved to Hollywood. He worked on his first big American movie, Torch Song Trilogy, in 1988. This was a comedy-drama film.
Pioneering Visual Effects
The next year, he worked on the science fiction movie The Abyss, directed by James Cameron. This film was very important for computer-generated visual effects.
For The Abyss, Mikael Salomon used special cameras. These cameras were designed to work underwater. He also helped figure out how to make the water look clear but also dark, like the deep ocean. They used plastic beads and a huge cover over the tank to do this. His amazing work on The Abyss earned him an Academy Award for Best Cinematography nomination.
After The Abyss, Mikael Salomon continued to work on other big movies. These included Always, Backdraft, and Far and Away.
Becoming a Director
In 1993, Mikael Salomon started directing. His first movie as a director was A Far Off Place. This was an adventure drama filmed in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

In 1998, he directed Aftershock: Earthquake in New York. This was a TV miniseries that was nominated for an Emmy. He went on to direct many more miniseries.
