Michael Labinjo (born July 8, 1980 – died September 21, 2018) was a Canadian professional gridiron football player. He played as a defensive end and linebacker. Mike was known for his time with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He also played for a short time in the National Football League (NFL). His NFL teams included the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Miami Dolphins.

Mike Labinjo's Early Life and College Football

Mike Labinjo was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He went to St. Michael's College School for his high school education. After high school, Mike played American football at Michigan State University. He played for the Michigan State Spartans from 2000 to 2003.

When he first joined the team, Mike was recruited as a running back. However, he later switched his position to linebacker for his second year. In 2001, he started every game as the strong side linebacker. This showed how important he was to the team.

During his junior year, Mike played in 12 games, starting in 8 of them. His final year in college, 2003, was his best. He made 94 tackles, which means he stopped the opposing team's players many times. He also had five sacks, which is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback.

Mike won an award called the Downtown Coaches Club Award. This award recognized him as the best senior defensive player. He graduated from Michigan State University in December 2003. He earned a degree in Economics and Finance.

After college, Mike hoped to join the NFL. He was not chosen in the NFL Draft. However, the Calgary Stampeders picked him in the 3rd round of the 2003 CFL Draft. He was the 25th player chosen overall.

Mike Labinjo's Professional Football Career

Mike Labinjo played in both the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He showed his skills as a strong defensive player in both leagues.

Playing in the National Football League

In 2004, Mike Labinjo joined the Philadelphia Eagles for their training camp. He was signed as a linebacker. He played in 3 games for the Eagles that year. He made 12 tackles during these games.

The year 2005 was busy for Mike. He started the season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in 5 games and even had his only NFL career start. He then moved to the Indianapolis Colts for 2 games. Finally, he finished the 2005 season with the Miami Dolphins.

In 2006, Mike continued to play for the Miami Dolphins. He played behind a famous linebacker named Zach Thomas. After the 2006 season, the Dolphins released him. He briefly signed with the Indianapolis Colts again in March 2007 but was released a few months later.

Playing in the Canadian Football League

Mike Labinjo signed with the Calgary Stampeders on July 16, 2007. This was his first season in the CFL. He played in six games before an elbow injury ended his season early. He made two defensive tackles and four special teams tackles.

The 2008 Calgary Stampeders season was a great one for Mike. He recorded 5 sacks, which tied him for the most on the team. He also made 33 tackles. In the playoffs, Mike was a key player. He had 8 tackles and 3 sacks in the West Division final game. This helped the Stampeders earn a spot in the 96th Grey Cup game.

Mike was very important in the Stampeders' 22–14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup. He made three tackles, one sack, and deflected four passes. This helped his team win the championship!

In January 2011, Mike was traded to the Montreal Alouettes. However, the trade was cancelled because of concerns about his elbow injury. On May 11, 2011, the Calgary Stampeders released Mike from his contract. This marked the end of his time playing professional football.

Mike Labinjo's Passing

Mike Labinjo passed away in his sleep on September 21, 2018. He was in Calgary, Alberta, and was 38 years old.
