Michael Edward O'Malley (born October 31, 1966) is an American actor, writer, and television producer. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in New Hampshire.
O'Malley started his career hosting children's game shows like Get the Picture and Nickelodeon Guts in the early 1990s. Later, he moved to Los Angeles to act in TV shows and movies. He is well-known for playing Jimmy Hughes on the CBS show Yes, Dear, which aired from 2000 to 2006. He also received an Emmy Award nomination for his role as Burt Hummel on the Fox series Glee.
Mike O'Malley has appeared in many other TV shows, including My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope, Parenthood, and Parks and Recreation. He has also been in films such as Deep Impact, Leatherheads, Eat, Pray, Love, R.I.P.D., Concussion, and Sully.
Besides acting, O'Malley is a playwright, which means he writes plays. Some of his plays include Three Years From Thirty and Diverting Devotion. He also wrote the screenplay for the film Certainty. Early Life and Education
Mike O'Malley was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire. His mother, Marianne, worked as a career counselor. His father, Tony O'Malley, was an executive in the defense industry.
O'Malley finished high school at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1984. He then went to the University of New Hampshire, where he studied theater. He graduated from the university in 1988.
Career Highlights
Television Roles
O'Malley's first big break in television was in 1991. He became the host of the Nickelodeon children's game show Get the Picture. The next year, in 1992, he started hosting Nickelodeon Guts. This show later became Global GUTS and he hosted it until 1995.
After GUTS ended, O'Malley moved to Los Angeles to focus more on acting. He starred in the series Life with Roger from 1996 to 1997. In 1999, he had his own show called The Mike O'Malley Show. During the 1990s, he also played a character called "The Rick" in commercials for the ESPN network.
From 2000 to 2006, O'Malley starred as Jimmy Hughes in the CBS comedy Yes, Dear. He even played this role again in 2013 on the sitcom Raising Hope. He also provided the voice for Darryl MacPherson in Baby Blues from 2000 to 2002.
In 2006, O'Malley appeared as a guest on My Name Is Earl. He played a police officer who loved bowling. In 2009, he began playing Burt Hummel on Glee. Burt was the father of a student on the show. Many people praised his acting in this role. He was even nominated for an Emmy Award for it. In 2010, he won a Teen Choice Award for Best Parental Unit for his role in Glee.
O'Malley also had a recurring role on Parenthood starting in 2010.

Mike O'Malley made his first movie appearance in 1998. He played an astronomy teacher in the film Deep Impact. He then had a supporting role in the comedy Pushing Tin. In 2000, he was in the film 28 Days.

Writing and Producing Work
Mike O'Malley is a talented playwright. Two of his plays, Three Years from Thirty and Diverting Devotion, have been published. They were also performed in theaters Off-Broadway. Another play he wrote, Searching for Certainty, was produced in Los Angeles in 2003.
He also directed the final episode of Yes, Dear, the show he starred in. He wrote the screenplay for the film Certainty, which was based on his play Searching for Certainty. This film won awards at the Boston Film Festival in 2011.
O'Malley was a writer and consulting producer for the Showtime series Shameless. He also helped write the book for the musical Escape to Margaritaville, which features songs by Jimmy Buffett. This musical was on Broadway in 2018.
He created the basketball comedy series Survivor's Remorse for Starz. He was also a writer and producer for this show. He is also an executive producer and showrunner for the series Heels. In Heels, he also has a recurring role as Charlie Gully.
Personal Life
Mike O'Malley lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Lisa. Lisa is a school psychologist. They have three children together.
His younger sister, Kerry O'Malley, is also an actress. She has performed on Broadway. Mike and Kerry O'Malley even acted together in the first season of Snowpiercer.
O'Malley is a big fan of Boston sports teams. He supports the Boston Red Sox baseball team, the NHL's Boston Bruins, and the NFL's New England Patriots. In 2006, he even threw out the first pitch at a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
In 2006, O'Malley gave the commencement speech at his old university, the University of New Hampshire. He also received an honorary degree from the university.
