Mike Scott had a strong start in his first three years at the University of Virginia. He was the team's top rebounder as a sophomore and junior. He was expected to have a great year in 2010–11. He started that season averaging almost 16 points and over 10 rebounds per game. However, his season ended early due to an ankle injury. He needed surgery for it.

Because of his injury, Scott was allowed to play an extra year. This meant he had a fifth year of eligibility. In the 2011–12 season, he became one of the best players in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He averaged 18 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He also led the ACC in field goal percentage, making 56.3% of his shots. He helped the Cavaliers achieve a 22–10 record. This led them to their first NCAA tournament in five years. They lost to Florida in the first round. Scott was recognized as an All-American by the Sporting News.

Scott finished his college career with 1,538 points. He is also the third-highest rebounder in Virginia Cavaliers history with 944 rebounds.
