Mikhail Afanasyevich Shakhov (Russian: Михаил Афанасьевич Шахов) was a famous freestyle wrestler from the Soviet Union. He was born on November 20, 1931, and passed away on August 8, 2018. He was known for competing in the bantamweight category.

Mikhail Shakhov's Early Life

Mikhail Shakhov was born in Saratov, Russia, in 1931. When he was young, his father sadly passed away during World War II in 1942. Mikhail grew up in the Saratov Oblast region of Russia.

Becoming a Champion Wrestler

Mikhail started wrestling when he was serving in the Soviet Army in Kiev, Ukraine. He joined the army in Kiev in 1951. At first, he trained in a sport called Sambo. By 1954, he became the champion of the USSR in Sambo!

Soon after, he focused on freestyle wrestling. He was very good at it. Mikhail won the Soviet bantamweight title three times: in 1956, 1960, and 1961. He also placed third in 1957. His favorite wrestling move was called kata guruma.

Olympic Achievements

Mikhail Shakhov competed in two Olympic Games. He went to the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and the 1960 Olympics. In 1956, he won a bronze medal for his country. This was a huge achievement for him!

Life After Competing

After he stopped competing, Mikhail became a wrestling coach. He helped train new wrestlers in Ukraine and Poland. Some of his famous students include Taras Danko and Valeriy Andriytsev. Mikhail lived most of his life in Kiev.

Family Life

In 1957, Mikhail Shakhov married Anastasiya. She was from the same region as him, Saratov Oblast. They had a daughter named Larisa. Larisa later married a basketball player named Alexander Belostenny. She lived in Germany. Anastasiya passed away in 2004.

Later Years

Mikhail Shakhov passed away in 2018 when he was 87 years old. He is remembered as a great wrestler and coach.
