Milbrulong is a small community located in the central east part of the Riverina region in New South Wales, Australia. It's about 515 kilometers (320 miles) southwest of Sydney, the state capital. It's also about 59 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of a bigger town called Wagga Wagga. Milbrulong is part of the Lockhart Shire local government area. A railway line, called the Oaklands railway line, goes through the area. The Milbrulong State Forest is also located nearby. In 2006, about 366 people lived in Milbrulong.
History of Milbrulong
The name Milbrulong comes from the local Wiradjuri language. The Wiradjuri people are the traditional owners of this land. The word mulbirrang means "Rosella parrot", which is a type of colorful bird.
The Milbrulong Post Office first opened on August 7, 1899. It helped people send and receive mail for many years before closing in 1976.
In May 1900, a new hotel called the Boundary Inn Hotel opened in Milbrulong. It was owned by Mr. J. H. Menz. The Milbrulong Railway Station also opened later that year, making it easier for people and goods to travel.
Milbrulong Football Club
The Milbrulong Football Club started playing games around 1901. Their first recorded match was against a team from Lockhart. The club played in many different football competitions over the years. In 1925, their team colors were royal blue, and by 1954, they were known as the Maroons.
The club was very active in the early 1900s, joining various leagues like the McLaurin Football Competition and the Lockhart Football Association. They even won a premiership in 1910, finishing at the top of their ladder in The Rock Football Association.
Like many clubs, Milbrulong Football Club had to stop playing during big events. They were in recess during WW1 (1916-1917) and WW2 (1941-1944). After World War I, the club reformed in 1918 and even made it to the Grand Final, finishing as Runners Up.
Sometimes, the club merged with other local teams to form stronger teams. For example, in 1913, they merged with Tootool FC. Later, in 1930, Milbrulong FC and Tootool FC merged again to become Tootool United FC, and they won the premiership that year! The Milbrulong team also won another premiership in 1939.
After World War II, the club continued to play, joining the Milbrulong & District Football League, which later changed its name to the Central Riverina Football League in 1949. The club had a long history of playing and competing in the local area.
