Miloš Vučević (born 10 December 1974) is a Serbian politician and lawyer. He served as the Prime Minister of Serbia from May 2024 to April 2025. He has been the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) since 2023. Before becoming prime minister, he was the Mayor of Novi Sad from 2012 to 2022. He also served as the Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia from 2022 to 2024.

Born in Novi Sad, Vučević studied law at the University of Novi Sad. After finishing his studies in 1999, he worked as a lawyer. He joined the SNS party in 2008. He became the head of the party's Novi Sad branch in 2011.

Early Life and Education

Miloš Vučević was born on 10 December 1974 in Novi Sad, which was then part of Yugoslavia. He went to elementary school in Novi Sad. He also attended a gymnasium (a type of high school) in Bački Petrovac.

After high school, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Novi Sad. He completed his law degree in 1999. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer until 2012.

Mayor of Novi Sad

Vučević became the mayor of Novi Sad in September 2012. He took over after a vote removed the previous mayor. His goals included finishing important construction projects like the Liberty Bridge. He also aimed to improve the city's roads and public services.

First Term as Mayor

When Vučević became mayor, Novi Sad's economy was recovering. He worked to fix financial issues in public services. In November 2012, he introduced new public buses. He also hoped the government would keep supporting the Exit music festival.

In 2013, Novi Sad became a sister city with Gomel, Belarus. Vučević also opened an office to help people with disabilities. He was re-elected as the head of the SNS party in Novi Sad in April 2015.

Second Term as Mayor

In the 2016 local elections, SNS won many votes in Novi Sad. Vučević was re-elected as mayor in July 2016. He formed a new local government with several parties.

In September 2016, the city assembly decided to lower the salaries of the mayor and other high-ranking officials. Novi Sad also started working with Siemens in March 2017. Vučević stopped a plan to demolish a city park after public protests.

During his time as mayor, the city's building plans changed. He started the "Novi Sad on Water" project, which planned new apartments along the Danube River. This project faced some criticism. Vučević also managed the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He closed public transport and parks and turned the Novi Sad Fair into a treatment center.

Third Term as Mayor

Vučević won the 2020 local elections, and was re-elected mayor in September 2020. He became the first mayor of Novi Sad to serve a third term. His priorities included building a new bridge and supporting youth.

In 2021, Vučević became the longest-serving mayor of Novi Sad. In February 2021, Novi Sad declared a day of mourning after the death of musician Đorđe Balašević. In 2022, Novi Sad was named the European Capital of Culture. Vučević supported Aleksandar Vučić in the 2022 general election.

Minister of Defence

After the 2022 general election, Vučević was named the next deputy prime minister. He was also announced as the new Minister of Defence. He resigned as mayor of Novi Sad in October 2022 and was sworn in as minister.

As Minister of Defence, Vučević visited the Serbian General Staff. He was involved in the North Kosovo crisis, supporting increased military readiness. He met with NATO officials and discussed the role of Kosovo Force (KFOR) in ensuring safety in Kosovo.

In January 2023, Vučević announced the defence ministry's budget. He visited North Macedonia to discuss restarting Serbia's participation in international military exercises. He also met with the Slovenian defence minister to talk about regional cooperation.

In May 2023, tensions between Serbia and Kosovo increased again. Serbia responded by raising its military readiness. Vučević also met with the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel. In November 2023, he met with Jens Stoltenberg, the head of NATO.

In October 2023, the government suggested holding new elections. Vučević was active in the SNS election campaign. After the elections, he was nominated to form the next government in March 2024.

He became Prime Minister of Serbia on 2 May 2024. His goals included introducing mandatory military service and strengthening cooperation with countries like China, Russia, and the United States. His government was the largest in Serbia since 2000.

Soon after becoming prime minister, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other international officials. He also signed agreements with Italy. In September, he discussed cooperation with Montenegro.

In July, several ministries signed an agreement to develop nuclear energy. Vučević's government focused on trade with China and signed a free trade agreement with Egypt. They also worked to strengthen ties with South Korea.

Vučević met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss lithium mining. His government brought back a lithium mining project, which led to environmental protests in July and August 2024. There were also protests and strikes from education unions in September and October, asking for higher wages.

Protests and Resignation

On 1 November 2024, a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station collapsed, causing deaths. This event led to a series of anti-corruption protests organized by students. The protests began in November 2024 after some students were attacked. Students demanded information about the station's reconstruction and other changes.

After another attack on students in Novi Sad on 28 January 2025, Vučević announced his resignation. He remained in his role until Đuro Macut was elected as the new prime minister on 16 April 2025.

After leaving the prime minister's office, Vučević became an adviser to President Aleksandar Vučić on regional issues.
