Milton John Daniels (born April 18, 1838 – died December 1, 1914) was an important American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of California. He had a long and interesting life, serving in the military and in politics.

Early Life and Education

Milton Daniels was born in a small village called Cobleskill (village), New York. He went to public schools there. Later, his family moved to Bradford County, Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, Milton worked with his father in the lumber business.

In 1856, he moved to Rochester, Minnesota. He became the deputy postmaster of Rochester in 1859. This was an important job, helping to manage the mail. In 1860, he went back to school at Middlebury Academy in Wyoming County, New York.

Service During the Civil War

When the Civil War began, Milton Daniels was ready to serve his country. He volunteered for the military on April 23, 1861.

After some time, he returned to Minnesota in August 1862. There, he helped create a military company. He was made a second lieutenant in Company F of the Ninth Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers.

During the Indian War of 1862, he took charge of the Third Minnesota Mounted Infantry. In 1863, he joined his company in St. Louis and was promoted to captain. In March 1865, President Lincoln made him a captain and commissary of subsistence. This meant he was in charge of supplying food and other necessities to the troops.

Life and Politics in Minnesota

After the Civil War ended, Milton Daniels went back to Minnesota. He started a career in banking. He was very involved in his community and state.

He became a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives. He served there from 1882 to 1886. After that, he was elected to the Minnesota State Senate, where he served from 1886 to 1890. He also led the Minnesota State Board of Asylums for the Insane from 1882 to 1888.

Moving to California and Congress

In 1889, Milton Daniels decided to move to California. He settled in Riverside. In Riverside, he started working in horticulture. This means he grew fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Milton Daniels was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the Fifty-eighth Congress. He served as a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1903, to March 3, 1905. He chose not to run for re-election after his term.

Later Life and Passing

After his time in Congress, Milton Daniels continued his work as a horticulturist in Riverside. He lived there until his death on December 1, 1914. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Riverside.
