Minden is a city located in Kearney County, Nebraska, in the United States. It is the main city and the county seat for Kearney County. In 2020, about 3,118 people lived there. Minden is famous for being home to the Pioneer Village, a large museum complex with many historic buildings.

History of Minden

Minden was officially started in 1876. The city got its name from a city in Germany, also called Minden. Many of the first people who settled in Minden were from Germany. The city has had its own post office since it was founded in 1876.

Minden has experienced some extreme weather. On July 24, 1936, the highest temperature ever recorded in Nebraska was in Minden. It reached a scorching 118 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius). This happened during a very hot period known as the 1936 North American heat wave, which was part of the Dust Bowl era.

Minden is home to a special place called the Pioneer Village. This is a huge museum complex. It has 28 different buildings spread out over 20 acres (about 81,000 square meters). The museum has more than 50,000 items in its collection. These items show what life was like for pioneers.

Minden is also known as "Nebraska's Christmas City". Every year, the courthouse square lights up with over 12,000 Christmas bulbs. They also put on an annual Christmas play. It is called "The Light Of The World". The tradition of lighting the courthouse started in 1915. Lights were first bought for a big meeting. When they couldn't be used for that, they became a Christmas display instead.
