History of Minden
Minden wasn't always in the same place! Its first location was about a mile east of where it is now. The Lewis family moved to this area from Georgia in 1849. A person named H.W. Watson gave the community its name. He named it after his hometown of Minden, Louisiana.
A post office opened in Minden in 1850. William H. Pate was the first postmaster, helping people send and receive mail. In the next ten years, a railroad track was built through Minden. The community also had a store and a church.
Minden then moved to its current location in the 1880s. By 1884, it had 50 residents, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds), and three churches. The population grew to 155, and the community gained sawmills (places where timber is cut into lumber), gristmills (mills for grinding grain), and even a newspaper.
The population doubled during that decade. However, it went down to 223 people by the year 1900. It grew to 250 in the mid-1940s. Then, it declined to 125 residents from the 1950s to the 1960s. The population went back up to 350 from the late 1960s through 2000.
