Minerva is a small town located mostly in Stark and Carroll counties in Ohio. A tiny part of it is also in Columbiana County. In 2020, about 3,684 people lived there. It's part of the larger Canton–Massillon area.

Minerva's History: A Look Back

The village of Minerva started in 1818. A surveyor named John Whitacre bought 125 acres of land. He planned to build a log mill there.

How Minerva Got Its Name

The town was named after John Whitacre's niece, Minerva Ann Taylor. She was born on April 19, 1828. She was born in a log house that is still standing today! The town grew up around the mill.

Early Growth and Industry

Minerva's first schoolhouse was built in 1846. In its early days, the Sandy and Beaver Canal helped the town's economy. Later, the Pennsylvania Railroad became very important in the 1840s. Minerva was also home to Willard and Isaac Pennock. They invented the first steel railroad car in the United States!

In 1915, the town had its own weekly newspaper. It was called The Minerva News. An annual subscription cost one dollar.
