Story of Miraculous
The story of Miraculous takes place in modern-day Paris. When bad things happen, teenagers Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste become superheroes. Marinette turns into Ladybug, and Adrien becomes Cat Noir. They use special magical jewels called Miraculous to transform.
Ladybug and Cat Noir do not know each other's secret identities. They work together to protect Paris from a mysterious villain called Hawk Moth. Hawk Moth wants to steal their powers. He uses his akuma, which are butterflies filled with negative energy. He sends these akuma to regular people in Paris who are feeling sad or angry. The akuma turn these people into supervillains.
Season One Adventures
At the end of the first season, Marinette meets Master Fu. He is the Guardian of the Miraculous. He is the one who gave Marinette and Adrien their magical jewels.
Season Two Challenges
In the second season, we find out that Hawk Moth is actually Gabriel Agreste, Adrien's father! Marinette also starts learning more about the Miraculous from Master Fu. Sometimes, Marinette has to lend other Miraculous jewels to her friends. This helps them become temporary heroes and fight supervillains.
These allied heroes come back at the end of the season. Hawk Moth makes many people sad or scared. The heroes win the fight, but Hawk Moth gets away. He is helped by Mayura, Gabriel's assistant Nathalie, who uses the Peacock Miraculous.
Season Three Battles
Hawk Moth keeps trying to get the Miraculous in season three. Mayura helps him by creating sentimonsters. These are creatures made from special feathers called amoks. Marinette asks even more friends to become Miraculous heroes. Meanwhile, Marinette's enemy, Lila, starts working with Gabriel. She doesn't know he is Hawk Moth.
During this season, Nathalie gets sick from using a damaged Miraculous. Also, Ladybug does not give the Bee Miraculous to Chloe. This makes Chloe upset, and she turns against Ladybug to join Hawk Moth.
How the Show Was Made
Idea and Beginning
The idea for Miraculous came from a French animator named Thomas Astruc. He was inspired by meeting a woman wearing a ladybug T-shirt. He also loved Japanese anime and reading comics for many years.
Astruc said he was working on another show when he met the woman. They shared drawings, and some had ladybugs. Marinette's hair in the show is even styled like that woman's hair! Astruc first drew Ladybug on sticky notes. He thought the Ladybug character was very strong.
Astruc first wanted to make Ladybug into a comic book. But then he met Jeremy Zag. Jeremy loved the idea and wanted to make it into a cartoon.
Creating Cat Noir
Thomas Astruc explained that ladybugs bring good luck. So, it made sense to pair Ladybug with a black cat character who had bad luck powers. Cat Noir was created as a tribute to comic characters like Catwoman. It was like having Catwoman and Spider-Man in the same show, but with their genders swapped.
A character named Félix was first planned to be Cat Noir. But the creators changed their minds and chose Adrien Agreste instead. They felt Félix was too much like a typical male anime hero. Adrien allowed them to tell more interesting stories. Years later, in 2019, Félix was brought back as Adrien's cousin, renamed Félix Graham de Vanily.
Show Themes and Writing
The show's original idea was for older teens and young adults, dealing with political topics. But it was changed to be for a younger audience. Thomas Astruc is happy that the show is enjoyed by both kids and adults.
Each episode takes about three months to create, from the first idea to the final version. An assistant director, Wilfried Pain, said that each episode has two parts. One part is like a sitcom, where characters talk and express themselves. The other part is action-packed, with the camera always moving.
The music for the show was created by Noam Kaniel. He also worked on other superhero shows like X-Men and Power Rangers. The main theme song was written by Kaniel and Jeremy Zag. The English words were written by Alain Garcia and sung by Wendy Child and Cash Callaway. The French version was sung by Marily and Noam.
Other Miraculous Adventures
An endless runner video game was made by TabTale. It was released in April 2018 as a mobile app. In April 2019, a new mobile game was announced, and Jeremy Zag showed it in May 2019.
An animated musical movie, called Ladybug & Cat Noir Awakening, is being made. It is planned to be released in 2021. A live-action TV series is also being developed.
