A Look Back in Time: Miradero's History
After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given to the United States by Spain in 1898. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the U.S. government did a count of the people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 1,268 people lived in Miradero.
The name Miradero comes from Spanish and means "vantage point" or "lookout." This name fits well because Miradero is located next to the city. It offers great views of Mayagüez and its bay, as well as the Mona passage. A famous person named Eugenio María de Hostos grew up in this area. He was born in the nearby Rio Cañas Arriba barrio.
