Maria Mireya Arboleda Cadavid (born July 1, 1928 – died February 21, 2021) was a famous Colombian classical pianist and a dedicated music teacher. She was known for her amazing piano performances and for inspiring many students.

Early Life and Learning Music

Mireya Arboleda was born in Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, on July 1, 1928. Her father, Fernando Arboleda López, was the mayor of Palmira. She had five sisters: Esmeralda, Pubenza, Fabiola, Violeta, and Soffy. Her name, Mireya, came from a poem by Frédéric Mistral.

Mireya started learning music when she was just 6 years old. She studied at the Antonio María Valencia de Cali Conservatory. A conservatory is a special school where people learn music or art. She earned a diploma there in advanced studies.

Later, she went to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, USA. This was a very famous music school. In 1957, she earned her Music Title and Artistic Diploma. She studied with a talented Hungarian pianist named Miklos Schwalb.

In the same year, Mireya took part in an International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro. This experience made her want to study even more. So, she moved to Paris, France. There, she earned a Masters of Piano Studies at the Conservatoire de Paris. This was another very famous music school. In Paris, Mireya was mentored by amazing pianists like Nadia Boulanger and Vlado Perlemuter.

When Mireya returned to Colombia after her studies, her talent surprised many people. She showed everyone what women could achieve in music.

A Career in Music

As a concert pianist, Mireya Arboleda performed in many places around the world. A concert pianist plays music for audiences in large venues. She gave recitals and concerts in cities like Boston, New York City, Caracas, and Brussels. A recital is a performance by one musician or singer.

She also performed many times in her home country of Colombia. She played concerts at important places like the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Bogotá and the León de Greiff Library in Medellín.

Mireya Arboleda later became a head music professor at the National University of Colombia. She spent about 30 years of her life teaching music to students. She helped many young musicians learn and grow.

Personal Life

Mireya Arboleda was married to Flavio Cruz Domínguez, who was a lawyer. They had two children, Santiago and José Antonio. Mireya Arboleda passed away on February 21, 2021, in Bogotá. She was 92 years old.
