The Mirvish+Gehry project is a plan to build two super tall buildings in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. These buildings will have many different uses, like homes and businesses. The famous architect Frank Gehry designed them, working with David Mirvish. You can find these future towers on King Street West, in an area called the Entertainment District.
What Makes Them Special?
These two towers will be very tall! One will have 91 floors, and the other will have 81 floors. When they are finished, they will be among the tallest skyscrapers in Toronto and even among the tallest skyscrapers in Canada. The shorter of the two towers will still be taller than Toronto's current tallest condo building, Aura.
What Will Be Inside?
The two towers will stand on opposite sides of Duncan Street. Together, they will have about 1,950 apartments for people to live in. But that's not all!
- The west tower will have a hotel.
- There will be a new campus for OCAD University, which is an art and design school.
- A public art gallery will be built to show off David Mirvish's amazing collection of abstract expressionist art.
Frank Gehry, who was born in Toronto, also designed the Art Gallery of Ontario building in the city.
How the Plan Changed
When the idea for these towers first came out in 2012, the plan was a bit different. It originally included three towers. This plan would have meant tearing down the Princess of Wales Theatre, which David Mirvish owned, and some old buildings from the early 1900s.
Even though many people liked the design, there were concerns about tearing down the theatre and the old buildings. People also worried about how big the whole project was.
After talking with the City of Toronto government, the plan was changed. Now, there will only be two towers. The good news is that the Princess of Wales Theatre will be saved! Also, parts of the old heritage buildings will be kept. The new, updated plan was approved for building in 2014. Later, in 2017, Mirvish sold the project to Great Gulf Corporation, a company that builds big towers like the One Bloor tower in Toronto. They will be in charge of developing the project.
