Mishik Airazatovich Kazaryan (Russian: Мишик Айразатович Казарян) was a brilliant scientist. He was born on February 28, 1948, and passed away on April 7, 2020. He was a physicist from Russia and Armenia.
Professor Kazaryan was an expert in laser physics and optics. He won the important State Prize of the USSR for his work in science. He was also a member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences. Kazaryan was best known for creating the brightest pulsed laser. This special laser produced light in the visible colors that we can see.
About His Life
Mishik Kazaryan's father, Airazat G. Kazaryan, was a doctor. His mother, Serik O. Vanuni, was also a respected doctor. She was an obstetrician-gynecologist.
In 1970, Mishik Kazaryan finished his studies. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He specialized in "Optics and Spectroscopy." After graduating, he started working at the Lebedev Physical Institute. He became a leading researcher there.
He earned his PhD in 1975. Later, in 1989, he received his Dr. Hab. degree. Mishik Kazaryan was also given the title of professor.
His Scientific Work
Professor Kazaryan focused on many exciting areas of science. He worked on making powerful lasers that could be tuned to different colors. He also studied how lasers could be used in laser medicine. This included using lasers to speed up tiny particles.
He was a top scientist in the field of gas lasers. He wrote many scientific papers and books. He also had international patents for his inventions. Professor Kazaryan developed a new way to make metal vapor lasers work. He created very efficient lasers that are still used today.
In 1980, Mishik Kazaryan and his team won the State Prize of the USSR. They received this award for their work on laser physics. He worked with other famous scientists like A.M. Prokhorov. Together, they helped develop modern laser physics.
In 2003, he became a full member of the A.M. Prokhorov Academy of Engineering Sciences. Then, in 2008, he became a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
Professor Kazaryan led many international science projects. He also helped organize many science conferences. He gave lectures about lasers in many countries. He taught many students who became experts in laser science.
He also loved sharing science with everyone. He was a science consultant for several films. One film was about Kirill Shchelkin, a scientist who worked on the first atomic bomb.
Family Life
Professor Kazaryan was married to Arpik Hasratyan. She was also a doctor and a professor. She specialized in epidemiology and virology.
They had two children together. Their daughter, Serine Kazaryan, became a gynecologist. Their son, Airazat Kazaryan, became a surgeon.
Mishik Kazaryan passed away on April 7, 2020, in Moscow. He died from problems caused by COVID-19. Sadly, his wife, Professor Arpik Hasratyan, had also died from COVID-19 just ten days before him.
Obituaries for Mishik Kazaryan and his wife were published in the journal “Science.” A documentary film was also made about his life. It is called “Mishik Kazaryan: The Path of an Explorer.”
