The Miskito Cays (in Spanish: Cayos Miskitos) are a group of islands found off the coast of northeastern Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea. They are part of a special area called the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. The entire group of islands covers about 27 square kilometers.
The Miskito Cays are made up of 76 different natural features. These include places where rivers meet the sea (called estuaries), colorful coral reefs, small sandy islands (called cays), underwater seagrass fields, and tiny islands (called islets). Out of these, 12 features are covered with plants and trees, forming islands with beautiful white sand beaches.
The biggest and most important island is Miskito Cay, also known as Cayo Mayor. It's right in the middle of the group. Other important islands include Maras Cay, Nasa Cay, and Morrison Denis Cay.
The Miskito Cays are also a special place called the Miskito Cays Biological Reserve. It was declared a protected area in 1991. This reserve is one of 78 protected areas in Nicaragua, meaning it's a place where nature is kept safe.
