The Mississauga First Nation is one of six First Nations that are part of the larger Mississauga Nations. This community is located in Canada, just west of Blind River, Ontario. It sits on the Mississagi River 8 Reserve.
What's in a Name?
The name "Mississauga" comes from the Ojibwe word Misswezaagiing. This word means 'a river with many outlets'. It refers to the Mississagi River, which flows into Lake Huron. The river forms a special shape, like a bird's foot, where it meets the lake. This area is a great home for fish and birds. Today, the river is part of a Provincial Park that is managed by different groups working together.
The people of Mississaugi have lived in this area for a very long time, since ancient times.
