Mistago River facts for kids
The Mistago River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Barlow River, which is part of a larger river system. The Mistago River is located in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James area, in the Nord-du-Québec region.
The river flows through different areas, including the Mistissini (Cree village municipality). It also passes through the Albanel Lakes Wildlife Reserve, Mistassini and Mistago and the Assinica Wildlife Sanctuary. These are special places where nature is protected.
You can reach the area around the Mistago River by a forest road. This road connects to Route 167, which comes from the town of Chibougamau. The river is usually frozen from early November until mid-May. It's safe to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

The Mistago River is about 21.1 kilometers (13.1 miles) long. It starts from an unnamed lake in the Mistissini (Cree village municipality). This lake is about 419 meters (1,375 feet) above sea level.
River's Journey
The Mistago River flows north of the Barlow River. The Barlow River then flows southwest and joins the Chibougamau River. From there, the water travels southwest through the Waswanipi River and into Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River). Finally, the water reaches Matagami Lake.

The name "Mistago River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was the same day the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's Place Names Commission) was created.
