Mitchell Daniel Marner (born May 5, 1997) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays as a right winger for the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Toronto Maple Leafs chose him fourth overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft.

Playing Career Highlights

Early Hockey Days

Mitch Marner started playing hockey at a young age. He developed his skills at 3 Zones Hockey School. He went to The Hill Academy and later Blyth Academy.

Marner played minor hockey in the Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). In the 2011–12 season, he won a GTHL championship with the Vaughan Kings. For the 2012–13 season, he played for the Don Mills Flyers. He scored 86 points in 55 games. After that, Marner joined the St. Michael's Buzzers and won a championship there.

Joining the London Knights

Marner was drafted by the London Knights in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection. He chose to play for them instead of going to the University of Michigan.

In his first season (2013–14) with the Knights, Marner scored 59 points in 64 games. He was the runner-up for the OHL Rookie of the Year award. During the 2014–15 season, Marner played very well. He was considered one of the top players for the 2015 NHL entry draft. He finished second in scoring in the league. He was named to the OHL First All-Star team. He also won the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the OHL's highest-scoring right wing.

On July 28, 2015, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Marner to his first professional contract. In October 2015, he became a co-captain for the Knights. He played with Christian Dvorak and Matthew Tkachuk. Marner finished the 2015–16 season second in OHL scoring with 116 points. He won the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL's most outstanding player.

Marner was key to the Knights winning the OHL Championship in 2016. He led the playoffs in scoring with 44 points. He also won the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the playoff MVP. He then helped the Knights win the 2016 Memorial Cup. He won both the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy (tournament MVP) and the Ed Chynoweth Trophy (leading scorer). Marner was only the second player ever to win all these major awards in one season.

Starting in the NHL with Toronto Maple Leafs

First Season (2016–17)

Marner made the Toronto Maple Leafs roster for the 2016–17 NHL season. He played his first NHL game on October 12. In his second game, he scored his first NHL goal. On October 27, 2016, he had his first game with three assists. He scored his first two goals in one game on November 3, 2016.

Marner was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for January 2017. He led all rookies with 11 assists and 15 points that month. He also set a Maple Leafs record for most assists by a rookie with 42. He finished the season with 61 points. Marner, William Nylander, and Auston Matthews were the first trio of rookies since 1981 to each score at least 60 points. His play helped the team reach the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs. He scored his first playoff goal in Game 1. The Leafs lost in six games to the Washington Capitals.

Continued Success (2017–19)

On December 19, 2017, Marner had his first four-point game. On February 10, 2018, he scored two goals and three assists for his first five-point game. He was the first Leafs player to do this since 2009. Marner finished the season leading the Leafs in assists and points. He helped the Leafs make the playoffs again. He led the Leafs in playoff scoring with nine points. However, the team lost to the Boston Bruins in seven games.

In the 2018–19 NHL season, Marner had another four-point game on October 9, 2018. On October 27, he got his 100th career assist. On January 3, he tied a Maple Leaf record for the fastest goal to start a game, scoring in seven seconds. On January 17, 2019, he became the first Maple Leafs player to start his NHL career with three straight 60-point seasons. He finished the season leading the team in scoring with 94 points. This made him the first Maple Leaf to score at least 90 points since Mats Sundin in 1997.

New Contract and Challenges (2019–21)

On September 13, 2019, Marner signed a six-year contract with the Maple Leafs. He was named an alternate captain for the 2019–20 Toronto Maple Leafs season. On December 23, 2019, Marner had his second five-point game. He scored two goals and three assists in an 8–6 win. He was selected for the 2020 National Hockey League All-Star Game for the first time.

The regular season ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Leafs played in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs in a "bubble" in Toronto. They lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the qualifying round. Marner had four assists in five games.

The 2020–21 NHL season was different because of the pandemic. The Leafs played only Canadian teams. On April 15, 2021, Marner became the fourth Maple Leafs player to have five straight seasons with 40 assists. The Leafs finished first in their division. They faced the Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs. The Leafs were expected to win, but they lost the series 4–3. Marner again had four assists in seven games. At the end of the year, Marner was named to the NHL First All-Star Team. This was the first time a Maple Leafs player made the First All-Star team since 1977.

Strong Seasons and Playoff Struggles (2021–24)

In the 2021–22 NHL season, Marner had a very successful regular season. He scored 35 goals and 62 assists in 72 games. On February 26, 2022, Marner scored a career-high four goals and six points in a 10-7 win. This was his first NHL hat-trick and four-goal game. He finished the season with 97 points. Marner was again named to the NHL First All-Star team.

In the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Leafs played the Tampa Bay Lightning. Marner scored his first playoff goal since 2019 in Game 1. He also had two assists. He played well in the series, but the Leafs lost again in the first round.

The 2022–23 Toronto Maple Leafs season was another strong year for Marner. He led the team in scoring. He had a franchise-best 23-game point streak. He scored 11 goals and 21 assists during this time. He was a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, given to the best defensive forward. He finished the season with 99 points.

The Maple Leafs finished fourth in the league. They faced the Tampa Bay Lightning again in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs. Marner played very well, scoring 11 points in six games. The Leafs won their first playoff series since 2004.

On November 30, 2023, Marner scored his second career hat trick. In the 2023–24 Toronto Maple Leafs season, he scored 85 points in 69 games. He suffered an ankle injury in March 2024 but returned later in the season.

Final Season with Maple Leafs (2024–25)

On December 27, 2024, Marner recorded his third career hat-trick against the Detroit Red Wings. On January 4, 2025, he helped score a game-opening goal for the 112th time in his career. This tied him for fifth most in Maple Leafs history. In March 2025, Marner chose to stay with the Maple Leafs after being asked to waive his no-trade clause.

The Maple Leafs beat the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the playoffs. They then faced the defending champions, the Florida Panthers. In Game 6, Marner helped Auston Matthews score the game-winning goal. This forced a Game 7, which the Leafs lost. Marner finished his last season with the Maple Leafs with two goals and 11 assists in 13 playoff games.

Joining the Vegas Golden Knights (2025–present)

On June 30, 2025, Marner signed an eight-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was then immediately traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nicolas Roy. He chose to wear number 93 again, which he had worn with the London Knights.

Marner first played for Canada at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He won a gold medal there. He tied for the leading scorer from Canada.

At the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, Marner led Canada in scoring. Canada reached the quarterfinals but lost to Finland.

Marner played for the Canada senior team at the 2017 IIHF World Championship. Team Canada won a silver medal. Marner scored 12 points in 10 games.

In 2025, Marner played for Team Canada at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. He scored one goal and had two assists. He assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime that won the tournament.

Marner was born in Markham, Ontario. He grew up in Thornhill. His parents are Paul and Bonnie Marner. He has an older brother named Christopher.

Growing up, Marner was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. In July 2020, Marner became a part-owner of OverActive Media, an esports company.

On July 29, 2023, Marner married his long-time girlfriend Stephanie LaChance. Many of his teammates attended the wedding. In February 2025, they announced they were expecting their first child. Their son, Miles Daniel Marner, was born on May 4, 2025.
