Mitchell Young, born on July 18, 1961, is a former American football player. He played as a defensive end in professional leagues like the National Football League (NFL) for the Atlanta Falcons. He also played college football and was part of teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Arena Football League (AFL).

Early Life and College Football

Growing Up in Mississippi

Mitchell Young was born on July 18, 1961, in a town called Coldwater, Mississippi. When he was older, he went to North Panola High School in Sardis, Mississippi. This is where he started his journey in football.

Playing College Football

Young began his college football career at Northwest Mississippi Community College. He played there for two years, from 1981 to 1982. After that, he moved to Arkansas State University. He continued playing football for the Arkansas State Red Wolves in 1983 and 1984. He was a key player for them during those seasons.

Professional Football Career

Starting in the CFL

In 1986, Mitchell Young signed with the Toronto Argonauts. This team is part of the Canadian Football League (CFL). However, he was released from the team on June 5, 1986.

Time in the NFL

Young later signed with the Denver Broncos on September 23, 1987. This happened during a time when NFL players were on strike. But he was released before he could play in any games for them.

On October 13, 1987, Young joined the Atlanta Falcons, also during the strike. He played in one game for the Falcons before being released on October 19, 1987. He signed with the Falcons again on February 21, 1988. Unfortunately, he got injured on August 23, 1988, and missed the entire 1988 season. He was released by the Falcons on August 28, 1989.

Back to the CFL

Young returned to the CFL in 1989, signing with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He played in two games during the 1989 season. In those games, he made four tackles. He was released by the team on October 29, 1989.

Playing in the Arena Football League

Denver Dynamite

In 1990, Young played for the Denver Dynamite in the Arena Football League (AFL). He played in all eight games that season. In the AFL, players often played both offense and defense. This was because of something called ironman rules.

During his time with the Dynamite, he had:

  • Four solo tackles
  • Four assisted tackles
  • 2.5 sacks (tackling the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage)
  • One forced fumble
  • One pass breakup (stopping a pass from being caught)

The Dynamite finished the season with a 4–4 record. They lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Dallas Texans. For his great performance in 1990, Young was named second-team All-Arena. He played in three games for Denver in 1991. In those games, he had two solo tackles and recovered one fumble.

Sacramento Attack

In 1992, Young played for the Sacramento Attack in the AFL. He played in all ten games for them that season. He recorded eight solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and 3.5 sacks. He also had one pass breakup.
