The Mitt Romney presidential campaign of 2012 was when Mitt Romney ran to become the President of the United States. He was a former governor of Massachusetts. His campaign officially started on June 2, 2011. He announced his plan to run for the Republican Party's nomination at an event in Stratham, New Hampshire. This was Romney's second time running for president. He had also tried in the 2008 Republican primaries.
He became the Republican Party's likely choice, known as the presumptive nominee, after winning the Texas primary election on May 29, 2012.
Choosing a Running Mate
On August 11, 2012, in Norfolk, Virginia, Romney announced his choice for vice president. He picked Paul Ryan. Ryan was a long-time U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. Later, in October 2015, Ryan became the Speaker of the House.
On August 30, 2012, Romney officially accepted the Republican Party's nomination. This happened at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.
The Election Day Outcome
Romney's campaign ended on November 6, 2012. He lost the 2012 presidential election to the current president, Barack Obama. Romney received about 60.9 million votes, which was 47.2% of all votes. He won 24 states and got 206 electoral votes.
What Happened Next
Six years later, in November 2018, Mitt Romney was elected to another important role. He became a U.S. Senator for the state of Utah.
