Mixed-Up Fairy Tales is a fun adventure game released by Sierra On-Line in 1991. It's like a sequel to another game called Mixed-Up Mother Goose. This game was made especially for younger players, different from Sierra's more complex games like King's Quest or Space Quest. In Mixed-Up Fairy Tales, you get to play as a child character. You can choose from six different kids and even name your character whatever you like! When the game was first sold, it came with a cool fairy tale coloring book and crayons.

What's the Story?

In Mixed-Up Fairy Tales, you are magically taken to a land of make-believe. A friendly dragon named Bookwyrm brings you there. Bookwyrm needs your help because five famous fairy tales are all mixed up! A mean troll named Bookend caused all the trouble.

The stories that need your help are:

For example, Cinderella's glass slipper is missing, so the prince can't find her. Jack's axe is gone, so he can't chop down the beanstalk. Snow White is lost and needs help finding the seven dwarves' house. You can ask Bookwyrm for advice anytime you need it. He knows all about the stories because he keeps them in his special book.

How to Play the Game

This game has a simpler way to play compared to other Sierra games from that time. Usually, Sierra games have many icons for different actions. But Mixed-Up Fairy Tales makes it easy for kids.

You only have two main icons:

  • One icon lets you interact with things, move your character, and talk to other characters.
  • Another icon lets you look closely at your surroundings.

A great thing about this game is that you cannot "die" or get stuck. You won't reach a point where you can't continue playing because you missed an important item. The game also saves automatically when you quit. It just saves your progress using your character's name.

Even though you can interact with your favorite fairy tale characters, most big events happen off-screen. Your movement is limited to a small area, about four screens by four screens. This helps keep the game focused and easy to navigate for young players.
