History of Modoc
The town of Modoc has a few interesting stories about how it got its name. One story says that a man on a train threw out a cigar box with the name "Modoc" on it. Henry Conley, one of the first people to settle in the town, found the box. He then suggested "Modoc" as a good name for the new town.
Another idea is that the town was named after the Modoc people. They were a Native American group from northern California. They became well-known for fighting against the U.S. Army during the Modoc War, which ended in 1873.
Modoc has had a post office since 1883.
