Who Was Saint Modwenna?
Her Life and Miracles
Modwenna is said to have done many amazing things, like performing holy miracles at Burton Abbey. Even today, people believe that a well at the abbey site has special healing powers. After some time, Modwenna left Burton-upon-Trent. She traveled to Scotland, where she passed away in Langfortin, a place near Dundee. It is said she lived to be 130 years old! Her body was later brought back to Burton-upon-Trent to be buried. Another important abbess and saint, Osyth, who died around the year 700, was taught and guided by Modwenna.
Conflicting Stories and Legends
Some historians believe that there might be some confusion about Modwenna's story. They think she might have been mixed up with another Irish saint named St Monenna (Moninne) or with a different Scottish saint also called Modwenna. This Scottish saint is believed to have started seven churches in Scotland, including one in Longforgan, near Dundee.
Because of these different stories, some people think that the old Anglo-Norman writings about her life might not be completely accurate. This could explain why she is sometimes linked to Alfred the Great, a famous king who lived in the 9th century. This would be about 200 years after Modwenna's time!

Many places honor Saint Modwenna today. For example, the church of St Modwen's, Burton upon Trent is named after her. There is also a chapel at Pillaton Hall and the Catholic church of St Mary and St Modwen Church, Burton-on-Trent that carry her name.
