History of Monroe
Monroe started as a small settlement in 1852. It grew around a sawmill built by Joseph White. This early settlement was known as White's Mill.
Around the same time, another small town called Starr Point was formed nearby. In 1857, Starr Point and White's Mill joined together. This new, combined town was named Monroe.
For many years, Monroe was an important city in Oregon. It was a busy place for paddle boats on the river. In the 1920s, Monroe High School was built.
In the 1960s, the Interstate 5 highway was built. This highway changed how people traveled. Monroe became more of a quiet farming community. Today, it is home to the historic Hull-Oakes Lumber Mill. This mill is special because it is the only steam-powered sawmill still working in the United States.
