Montello is a city in Marquette County, Wisconsin, United States. It is also the county seat, which means it's where the county government is located. In 2010, about 1,495 people lived here. The Fox River flows right through the city. Montello is famous for having the largest tree in Wisconsin. You can also visit a former granite quarry that has been turned into a park with pretty waterfalls. The Montello post office has been open since 1850.

Geography of Montello
Montello covers a total area of about 2.15 square miles (5.57 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, while a smaller part is water.
Rivers and Lakes
The Fox River flows through the middle of Montello from east to west. There is a dam in Montello. The part of the river west of the dam is called Buffalo Lake.
The Montello River also flows into the city from the north. It joins the Fox River at the south end of Montello. Upstream from another dam on the Montello River is Montello Lake.
Montello's Climate
Montello has a climate known as a warm-summer humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
Temperature Extremes
The hottest temperature ever recorded in Montello was 104°F (40°C). This happened on July 14, 1995, and again on July 6, 2012. The coldest temperature recorded was -35°F (-37°C). This was on January 15, 1963, and January 9, 1977.

Montello has several roads that connect it to other towns. It also has a history with railroads.

The place where WIS 22 and WIS 23 meet is important. It's where you'll find the only traffic light in the entire county! Other county highways like C, F, K, and Y also enter Montello.
Railroad History
Montello used to be the end point of a special train track. This track was built in 1882 by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. It helped transport granite from the local quarry and other goods. This train line was removed in 1946, even though it was still used almost every day.
