The area where Monteros is now was bought in 1754. A military governor named Don Felipe Antonio de Alurralde acquired the land.

Later, in 1867, Monteros became an official municipio. This means it became a self-governing town. Don Domingo Segundo Aráoz was chosen as its very first mayor. After that, Monteros grew and became an important town in the southern part of the Tucumán region.

What's in a Name? The Origin of Monteros

The name "Monteros" has a few interesting stories behind it. One idea is that it comes from people who lived in the old city of San Miguel de Tucumán. This old city was in a place called Ibatín.

When the city moved to a new spot, some people didn't want to go. They went to hide in the nearby hills. The word "Monte" in Spanish means "hill." So, "Monteros" might mean "people of the hill."

Another story says that the people who stayed in old San Miguel de Tucumán founded Monteros on October 4, 1865. They supposedly named it "the Town of the Holy Rosary of Monteros."

There were also three attempts to change the town's name! In 1828 and 1832, people tried to name it "Villa Belgrano" to honor Manuel Belgrano, an important Argentine hero. But it didn't stick. The strangest attempt was in 1932. The governor at the time, Alejandro Heredia, tried to rename it "Alexandria" after himself! Luckily, that didn't happen either.

Economy: What Monteros Produces

The main way people earn money in Monteros is through farming. The most important crop is sugar cane. The Ñuñorco plant, which started in 1926, is the biggest factory in town. It processes all that sugar cane.

The farms around Monteros are also great for growing other fruits. You'll find lots of lemons, blueberries, and strawberries growing there.
