The Montjuïc Communications Tower is a special tower in Barcelona, Spain. People also call it Torre Calatrava or Torre Telefónica. It was designed by a famous architect named Santiago Calatrava. Building the tower took three years, from 1989 to 1992.
This white tower was built for the company Telefónica. Its main job was to send out television signals for the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. The tower is about 136-metre (446 ft) tall. It stands in the Olympic park and looks like an athlete holding the Olympic Flame.
The bottom part of the tower is covered with a special type of mosaic called trencadís. This mosaic style uses broken pieces of tiles to create beautiful patterns. It was made famous by the architect Antoni Gaudí.
A Giant Sundial
The Montjuïc Communications Tower is not just for sending signals. It also works as a huge sundial! Because of how the tower is placed, its shadow moves across Europa Square. This shadow tells the time, just like a regular sundial.
